South Plateau Ministry – Nigeria
South Plateau ministries’ is dedicated to:
- Supporting and empowering pastors serving in rural areas of Nigeria where churches are not yet healthy churches, self-sustainable and able to financially able to provide monthly salaries to their pastor.
- Our goal is that through our funding, and the training of these pastors, churches will become self-sustaining and financially independent.
- The ministry also focuses on recruiting, training, and sending pastors to plant and support churches in underserved rural areas.
History
The story of South Plateau Ministry began in 1995, when a 27-year-old deacon named Sunday Gomna faced a life-changing decision. When the pastor of his church resigned, the other deacons asked Sunday to serve as interim pastor. He accepted the call—and over the next 18 years, God used him to grow the church from approximately 100 to more than 400 people in a predominantly Muslim community.
The challenges were significant. His parsonage was burned, along with his personal possessions, and the church itself was burned three times. Yet Pastor Sunday remained faithful to God’s call.
Along the way, he continued his education, earning a BA and MA and, years later, a Doctor of Ministry degree from West Africa Theological Seminary in Lagos. But God’s call ultimately led him back to Plateau State.
It was there, Pastor Sunday began working with churches in rural villages throughout the region. His ministry grew to include helping struggling churches, training and encouraging pastors, and planting new churches. He was eventually elected President of the Plateau South Baptist Conference where he serves today.
Despite severe challenges, he remains faithful to the mission and vision established years ago.
The Impact
A recent report from the Nigerian Baptist Convention described the situation this way:
“Because the Plateau South region faces severe local security challenges and communal attacks, Dr. Gomna’s leadership is heavily focused on pastoral care, local relief efforts, and coordination support for displaced church communities in the middle belt of Nigeria.”
Behind those words are real people—pastors serving in difficult places, churches that have been burned or damaged, and families who have lost homes, loved ones, and their livelihoods.
